From its inception, Xanadu Beach Resort and Marina, on Grand Bahama Island, a sub-tropical yacht and tennis club was home-away-from-home to the International jet set. In 1969, the grand opening was heralded as the "social event of the year", welcoming such superstars as Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr., Cary Grant and David Merrick, as well as royalty from around the world, all arriving by private jet or yacht.

Upon purchase by Howard Hughes in the mid-70's, the resort's reputation leaped from the celebrity columns to the front page. Hughes spent his days in Penthouse C, which provided a view of the entire grounds - and a secure shelter for his private activities. Selected Xanadu employees resided on the floor below, to provide personal services.
